My Career As An Artist - 940 Words

Life is a journey, and my journey took an unexpected turn in March, 2014, when I was suddenly laid off. With an Associate of Arts degree and 17 years’ experience, I assumed I would have no problem finding another office manager job. Once I started my job search, I was surprised that my experience didn’t mean much without a bachelor’s degree. Humbled by this information, I started to apply for entry level positions with the belief that I could start over and prove myself again. After being told I was ‘overqualified’ I felt lost. What was I supposed to do to get back into the job market? With only one option left, I enrolled at BSU to gain my bachelor’s degree. My first semester, I chose elementary education as my major, but started to feel that wasn’t a good fit for me. After getting accepted into the art department, I changed my major to visual arts dreaming of a career as an artist. I spent the spring of 2015 immersed in art, and while I love BSU’s art program, I began to question whether art is really a career choice or more of a hobby for me. Again I was left wondering what I should do with my life and education. While perusing the course catalog, I came upon the MDS program. When I saw it I felt like a light bulb clicked on. This was it! I was excited to realize there was a program I could align my education with the experience and training I received while employed, along with expanding my knowledge of art, specifically photography.
